Frequently Asked Questions
What types of expedition trucks do you rent?
Each Skybreaker truck is a professionally engineered, off-grid expedition vehicle built for long-range, all-terrain travel. Our fleet includes military-grade platforms like the Acela Monterra M1088 (“Roxanne”) and custom 4×4/6×6 overland builds equipped for comfort, reliability, and total self-sufficiency.
How much does it cost per day to rent a truck?
Rental rates typically range from $1000–$1500 CAD per day, depending on the truck, duration, and season. Long-term or off-peak rentals may qualify for adjusted rates.
What’s included in the rental rate?
Full vehicle use, onboard systems (solar, water, power), essential camping gear, Starlink internet, basic insurance, and remote support are included. Fuel, campsite fees, and travel insurance are not.
Where can I pick up or return the truck?
Pick-up and return are available anywhere in BC or Alberta, or at major international airport destinations across North America.
Can the truck be delivered to a different location?
Yes — we can deliver or retrieve the truck anywhere in North America for a transport fee based on distance.
What license do I need to drive one of your trucks?
A valid Class 5 (non-GDL) or equivalent license is generally accepted. Equivalent accepted licenses in British Columbia are also permitted. Some international or heavier builds may require proof of air-brake experience or a simple endorsement check.
Are international drivers eligible to rent?
Yes. We welcome foreign travelers with an International Driving Permit (IDP) and a passport-matching home license.
What is the minimum rental period?
The standard minimum is 7 days, though longer bookings are recommended to take full advantage of travel distances and off-grid capabilities.
Do I need to pay a deposit to secure my booking?
Yes — a 50% deposit confirms your dates, with the balance due 60 days before departure.
Is the security deposit refundable?
Yes. A fully refundable $10,000 CAD damage deposit is required. You must have the ability to leave such a deposit on a major credit card or by direct transfer.
Do you provide rental insurance, or do I need my own?
Basic commercial rental insurance is included. You may add optional coverage or travel protection for personal items, cancellations, or injuries.
What happens if I damage the truck or get into an accident?
Notify Skybreaker immediately. We’ll coordinate roadside support and repairs. Your deposit may be held until damage is assessed, but you’ll receive transparent documentation of any charges.
Can I take the truck across the U.S. or Canadian border?
Yes — most trucks are pre-approved for U.S. and inter-provincial travel, pending insurance confirmation. Mexico is currently off-limits.
Where am I allowed to camp or travel with the truck?
You’re free to travel on public roads, forestry service roads, and designated Crown Land areas. Respect closures, weight limits, and private property boundaries.
What level of off-roading is permitted?
Moderate trails, gravel, and forestry access roads are allowed. Extreme rock crawling, deep water crossings, or intentional vehicle abuse are not.
How long can I stay off-grid before needing to refill or recharge?
Most trucks sustain 7–10 days off-grid under normal use — and some even longer! Solar, alternator charging, and large water/fuel reserves extend that even further.
What fuel type does the truck use, and how much fuel does it hold?
All trucks run on diesel, with combined capacities ranging from 210 – 570 litres, offering over 1000 km of range per fill.
Is there a training session before departure?
Yes. Every rental includes a comprehensive orientation on driving, safety, and all onboard systems. Extra training days can be added for new drivers or group learning.
What happens if I have a mechanical issue on the road?
You’ll have direct contact with Skybreaker support. Most issues can be diagnosed remotely — if not, we coordinate local service or dispatch mobile assistance.
Do you offer roadside or remote support during my trip?
Yes — 24 / 7 remote assistance via phone, text, or Starlink video call is included with every rental.
Are pets allowed?
Yes, well-behaved pets are welcome. A cleaning fee may apply if excessive hair or damage occurs.
Can I bring additional gear like bikes, paddleboards, or kayaks?
Absolutely. Most trucks have exterior racks and mounting systems. Let us know your gear in advance so we can confirm fitment.
Can I reschedule my trip after booking?
Yes — rescheduling is allowed once per booking if done 60 days prior and subject to fleet availability.
Do you offer guided expeditions or training programs?
Yes. Join Skybreaker Guided Expeditions or enroll in Overland Training Programs designed to build confidence in off-road driving, recovery, and self-reliant travel.
What is the “Try Before You Buy” experience?
It’s a one-on-one consultation and test experience for future owners — spend time in one or more trucks, explore system options, and learn what to look for before investing in your own build.
Do you help owners design, build, or outfit their own expedition trucks?
Yes — our consulting service guides owners through design planning, component selection, and vendor management to ensure reliability and value in custom builds.
How can I partner my truck with Skybreaker Overland for rentals or expeditions?
We offer revenue-share and lease-back programs for owners who want their trucks to earn when not in use. Each partnership is customized for usage, insurance, and maintenance goals.
